Car insurance setup

From basic to comprehensive protection

There are three types of car insurance in Switzerland: Third-party liability, partially comprehensive and fully comprehensive insurance. Each of these types of insurance offers specific cover and is suitable for different needs.

Liability

Third-party liability insurance is mandatory for all vehicle owners in Switzerland. It covers damage that vehicle owners cause to others with their vehicle, including property damage and personal injury. This insurance is crucial as it protects vehicle owners from the high costs that can arise in the event of an accident involving third parties. Although the benefits of liability insurance are largely similar across all providers in Switzerland, there are differences in premiums and customer service.

Partial casco

Partial casco insurance is a voluntary supplementary insurance that covers damage to your own vehicle caused by external events such as hail, flooding, theft, vandalism, fire or collisions with animals. This insurance is recommended for vehicle owners who want to insure their vehicle against such unforeseeable events.

Fully comprehensive

Fully comprehensive insurance offers the most comprehensive protection. It includes the benefits of partial casco as well as cover for damage that vehicle owners cause to their vehicle themselves, such as in the event of an accident. This form of insurance is particularly recommended for new or valuable vehicles, as it offers comprehensive cover. In the event of a claim, fully comprehensive cover reimburses the current value of the vehicle, not the replacement value.

Frequently asked questions

These are some of the most frequently asked questions from customers

Premiums for car insurance in Switzerland are calculated on the basis of various factors. These include the age and model of the vehicle, the owner's driving history, the selected cover and the excess. Insurance companies use statistical data and risk assessments to calculate the probability of claims and set the premium amount accordingly.

Yes, a higher co-payment generally reduces the amount of the premium payment.

Parking damage cover is an additional option for your car insurance that pays for damage caused to your parked vehicle without the person responsible being identified. However, if you cause damage to your car yourself when parking or leaving a parking space, this falls under comprehensive damage, which can be covered by fully comprehensive insurance, not parking damage cover.

You can usually cancel your car insurance with a notice period of 1 to 3 months before the contract expires. There are also special circumstances in which you can cancel, such as after a claim or if you sell your vehicle. Remember to give notice of termination in writing, preferably by registered letter.
